Overview:

The SHAPES project intends to build and deploy a large-scale, EU-standardised open platform. The integration of a broad range of technological, organisational, clinical, educational, and societal solutions seeks to facilitate active and healthy ageing (AHA), the maintenance of a high-quality standard of life, and empower older adults as custodians of their own health and care.

Empowerment, that can be defined as a social process of recognizing, promoting, and enhancing people’s ability to meet their own needs, solve their problems and mobilize the necessary resources to feel in control of their own lives [1], can be facilitated by digital solutions, particularly solutions related to decision-making and action in health and care. However, digital solutions are not facilitators of empowerment simply because they exist. Their conception, development, and evaluation are a complex process that requires due consideration of a number of potentially hindering factors and the involvement of a number of partners, with particular relevance for the end-users, to guarantee that the technology is adopted and, ultimately, its use results in added value in daily life.

This 6th dialogue workshop intends to gather representatives from industry, academia, health and care organisations, civil society as well as older people. The Workshop will focus on:

• Introducing the concept of empowerment and strategies to embrace it;
• Identifying the barriers and facilitators to empowering older adults;
• Discussing the potential of digital solutions to empower older adults as custodians of their own health and care;
• Understanding how SHAPES can make a difference in promoting older adults’ active role in health and care decision making.

The organizers University of Aveiro, Portugal, invite all stakeholders to participate in the 6th SHAPES Dialogue Workshop.
